Let’s talk about something that sounds like it belongs in a mad scientist’s lab: caustic soda, also known as lye. It might not sound like the kind of thing you’d want near your skin, let alone in a bar of your favourite creamy goat milk soap. But stay with us – because without lye, we’d just be selling you a very fancy block of oily goat milk mush. And that would be… baaad.

🧪 So What Is Lye, Anyway?

Lye is a strong alkali (specifically, sodium hydroxide) that reacts with fats and oils to create something new: soap. This magical transformation is called saponification, which is just a fancy word for “turning oils into soap.” It’s kind of like a makeover, but for molecules.

Think of it like a high school chemistry love story. Lye meets fat, they get all bubbly, sparks fly, and together they form a brand-new compound that’s way better than the sum of its parts: soap + glycerin.

☠️ But Isn't Lye Dangerous?

Yep – in its raw form, lye is a bit spicy. It can burn skin and cause damage if handled improperly. But here’s the important bit: once saponification is complete, there is no lye left in the finished goat milk soap. Zero. Nada. Zip. It’s all been transformed into mild, nourishing soap and naturally occurring glycerin (which makes your skin feel lush).

We pH test every single batch before it hits the shelf to make absolutely sure the saponification process is complete and there’s no lye left in the bars. If the soap doesn’t pass the test, it doesn’t get sold — simple as that. Our goats wouldn’t have it any other way

Lye sounds scary, but it’s absolutely essential in the soapmaking process. By the time your bar hits your bathroom, all the lye has done its job and disappeared – leaving behind only rich, gentle soap packed with goat milk goodness.
